Robin John Adcroft

(Aka Robin Banks)

1950–2018

Robin Adcroft, also known by his broadcast pseudonym Robin Banks, was a notable figure in the world of offshore “pirate” radio. Born on May 23, 1950, he made significant contributions to various radio stations during his career.

Robin began his offshore radio career aboard the Redsand Forts as an engineer in the late 1960s and then went to work / reside aboard the Mi Amigo in 1972/73. He also occupied the Redsand Forts in the Early 1970s as part of a commune called Sea Tribe and this was where his love affair with the Redsand Army Sea Forts began.

He is best known for his work on Radio Northsea International (RNI), where he presented programs using the name Robin Banks. The surname “Banks” was a tribute to his beloved grandmother, who was also a character in her own right.

Robin also worked on other stations, including Radio Caroline, Radio Free London (RFL), Lazer 558, Voice of Peace, and Radio Nova as a Transmitter Engineer and DJ.

Robin co-founded the original charity, Project Redsand Trust in late 2003 and was instrumental in contacting the relevant authorities to gain permission and access to the Forts. He found funding which allowed the Project to install the safe landing stage access system which we still use today.

Robin also gained the permissions and subsequent licensing for Redsands Radio in 2007 and 2008, these broadcasts were the first Legal Broadcasts ever made from the Redsand Forts.

Robin Adcroft sadly passed away at the Leckhampton Court Hospice near Cheltenham in 2018 after a short but well fought battle with cancer.

His legacy lives on in the memories of radio enthusiasts and fans of offshore broadcasting and also in The Project as our Founder and Visionary which he started in 2003.
