PROJECT REDSAND

FRIENDS OF THE

FORTS

The size of the task is fully understood by the Project Managers. They are, however, confident that support to undertake the work required will be forthcoming following completion of the structural survey, and formal approval to proceed is given by the relevant authorities.

Sponsors

Meanwhile, two major civil engineering groups are playing an active part in the restoration of the Redsand Towers. They are Mowlem Marine (now Carillion) and Taylor Woodrow. Project Redsand are extremely grateful to both companies for their foresight and dedication to the conservation of our heritage. Both Mowlem and Taylor Woodrow have provided costly services to Project Redsand without charge. Both companies have supported the Project from the outset and without their support, this project would be difficult to realise.

The Sailing Barge Greta

The Greta is a historic Thames sailing barge built in 1892 by the Stone Brothers in Brightlingsea, Essex. Originally constructed for transporting various cargoes such as ammunition, beer, grain, malt, and building supplies, she played a significant role in both World Wars. During World War II, Greta was chartered by the Ministry of Supply to carry ammunition from the ordnance depot at Upnor to naval vessels in the Thames estuary. She also participated in the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940, making her the oldest active “Dunkirk Little Ship” still in operation today.

After her active service years, Greta was converted into a motor barge in the 1950s and later re-rigged as a sailing barge yacht in the late 1980s. She is currently based in Faversham, Kent, and offers chartered sailing trips from Whitstable Harbour. These trips often include visits to historical sites like the Maunsell Army Forts in the Thames Estuary. Despite no longer carrying cargo, Greta remains a significant piece of maritime heritage, maintained in full sailing condition and continuing to participate in barge matches and public charters.

Fort Luton

Fort Luton played a significant role in World War II, primarily serving as a Gun Operations Room (GOR) for the 27th Anti-Aircraft Brigade within the Thames and Medway South Gun Defended Area. This conversion took place in 1938, positioning the fort as a crucial component in the region’s air defense strategy.

During this period, Fort Luton was extensively modified to enhance its defensive capabilities. The fort’s magazine was converted into an engine room, and other casemates were transformed into signals and operations rooms. The installation of blast walls and the establishment of a hutted camp at the fort’s rear provided additional protection and accommodation for the personnel stationed there.

The fort’s operations room was central to the coordination and execution of anti-aircraft defenses, making it a pivotal site for plotting and decision-making during air raids. Fort Luton remained operational in this capacity until 1945, contributing significantly to the defense against aerial attacks in the Thames and Medway areas.

For more detailed information, you can visit the Fort Luton official website.

Slough Fort

During the mid 19th century Britain and France found themselves in a ‘Cold War’.

As a result of the French building a new fleet of modern steam and sail ironclads, armed with the new rifled guns, and their building of a new naval port at Cherbourg, the public faith in the Royal Navy to protect the country from a possible invasion was low. Britain’s fleet was still the same type of ships that had beaten the French at Trafalgar in 1805.

The British response was a ‘crash’ naval building programme to out build the French with ironclad warships armed with rifled guns, to improve naval bases and to start a massive national scheme to upgrade the coastal defences.

Slough Fort at Allhallows was built as part of this programme.
